Anderson PD hosts Mental Health First Aid for Public Safety!

The Anderson Police Department, recently, hosted a Mental Health First Aid for Public Safety certification seminar at their department headquarters. Deputies from the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, corrections officers, Problem Court case managers, Elwood police officers, and Anderson police officers added valuable tools to their growing “tool box” of skills for working with the people they serve in their communities.

Your Madison County public safety personnel are working hard to be able to serve their community better by learning new skills and reinforcing the ones they already use through learning and practice. The Police Chief told us that the department has been trained and certified in Crisis Intervention in the recent past, and he thought that Mental Health First Aid certification would be beneficial. We are happy to see our public safety personnel taking an active role in increasing their skills and understanding of the problems and alternative solutions they can consider on a case-by-case basis.

The International Association of Chiefs of Police suggest that 100% of all officers become certified in Mental Health First Aid for Public Safety and 20% of officers become YOUTH Mental Health First Aid certified. The importance of understanding the most common mental health problems they will encounter in the community is of utmost importance. Equally important is that police officers work in a very high stress environment, and being able to identify and have the skills to help a fellow officer who may be suffering will optimally mean early intervention, possible treatment, and recovery from potential disorders related to high levels of workplace stress and possible trauma.

We care about our officers and appreciate the high-stress job you do for our communities. Thank you! Kudos to all who attended our training and certified in Mental Health First Aid (adult version) for Public Saftey! You Rock!
